Rotary Club of REYNOLDSBURG/PICKERINGTON CLUB COMMENTS February 2, 2010 No.1199
Our Speaker
Her Brother remembered More info to follow! ROTARY International While this is general knowledge it is worth repeating once in a while. Early years The first Rotary Club was formed in downtown Chicago by attorney Paul P. Harris on February 23, 1905. Harris held the first meeting with three friends, Silvester Schiele, coal merchant, Gustave E. Loehr, mines engineer and Hiram E. Shorey, tailor. The members chose the name Rotary because they rotated club meetings to each member's office each week. The National Association of Rotary Clubs in America was formed in 1910. In April 1912, Rotary chartered a branch in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,[6]marking the first establishment of an American-style service club outside the United States.[7] This was followed in August 1912 by the chartering of the first club outside North America in London, England. Although the Dublin club was organized before the London club, it did not receive its charter until after the London club was chartered.[8] To reflect the addition of the clubs outside of the United States, the name was changed to the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1912.[9] During World War I, Rotary in Britain increased from 9 to 22 clubs,[10] and other early international branches were Cuba in 1916 and India in 1920. In 1922, [11] the name was changed to Rotary International. By 1925, Rotary had grown to 200 clubs with more than 20,000 members Rotary Foundation T he mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. There are as many reasons to support The Rotary Foundation as there are ways to do good in the world. By contributing to the Foundation, you advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through
the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Rotary launched its PolioPlus program in 1985. Since then, eradicating polio has been the organization's top priority. End Polio Now and help fulfill its promise. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION'S BEGINNINGSome magnificent projects grow from very small seeds. The Rotary Foundation had that sort of modest beginning. In 1917 RI President Arch Klumph told the delegates to the Atlanta Convention that "it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world." The response was polite and favorable, but the fund was slow to materialize. A year later the "Rotary Endowment Fund," as it was first labeled, received its first contribution of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, which was the balance of the Kansas City Convention account following the 1918 annual meeting. Additional small amounts were annually contributed, but after six years it is reported that the endowment fund had only reached $700. A decade later, The Rotary Foundation was formally established at the 1928 Minneapolis Convention. In the next four years the Foundation fund grew to $50,000. In 1937 a $2 million goal was announced for The Rotary Foundation, but these plans were cut short and abandoned with the outbreak of World War II. In 1947, upon the death of Paul Harris, a new era opened for The Rotary Foundation as memorial gifts poured in to honor the founder of Rotary. From that time, The Rotary Foundation has been achieving its noble objective of furthering "understanding and friendly relations between
peoples of different nations." By 1954 the Foundation received for the first time a half million dollars in contributions in a single year, and in 1965 a million dollars was received. It is staggering to imagine that from those humble beginnings, The Rotary Foundation is now receiving more than $45 million each year for educational and humanitarian work around the world.
